Schuyler Hospital is committed to quality care and we have received many honors and distinctions as a result of our efforts toward excellence.

 

2016

For 13th Year, Schuyler Hospital Earns Quality Respiratory Care Recognition Award
(February) Schuyler Hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Services Department has once again earned the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) award from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). This is a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services in hospitals. About 700 hospitals, or approximately 15% of the hospitals in the United States, have applied for and received this award. Schuyler Hospital has received the QRCR award every year since it was first awarded in 2003.

 

 

2015 

Schuyler Hospital Earns “Top Performer on Key Quality Measures®” for 2015 Recognition from The Joint Commission
(November) Schuyler Hospital has been recognized as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. Schuyler Hospital was recognized as part of The Joint Commission’s 2015 annual report “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety.” This data-driven report critically evaluates hospital performance on evidence-based care processes for treating conditions such as heart attacks, pneumonia, and stroke, with an emphasis on increasing healthy outcomes.  Schuyler Hospital is one of only 1,043 hospitals out of more than 3,300 eligible hospitals in the United States, and just one of 29 out of 198 total hospitals in New York State, to achieve the Top Performer distinction.

Schuyler Hospital Recognized by NYS Cancer Registry
(September) For the fourth year in a row, Schuyler Hospital has been recognized by the New York State Cancer Registry for “Completeness and Timeliness of Cancer Reporting.” The recognition specifically praises the Hospital’s Medical Records Department for meeting the requirement of reporting every six months on the number of cancer patients admitted or observed by Schuyler Hospital.

Schuyler Hospital’s Lab Reaccredited by Joint Commission
(July) Schuyler Hospital announced that it has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Laboratory Services Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care. Schuyler Hospital’s Laboratory Services Department underwent a rigorous, unannounced on-site survey this spring. During the review, a Joint Commission expert surveyor evaluated compliance with laboratory standards related to several areas, including document and process control, healthcare-associated conditions, risk reduction, and staff qualifications and competency. The surveyor also conducted on-site observations and interviews.

For 12th Year, Schuyler Hospital Earns Quality Respiratory Care Recognition Award, Plus Accredited for Echocardiograms
(April) Schuyler Hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Services Department has once again earned the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) award from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). This is a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services in hospitals. About 700 hospitals, or approximately 15% of the hospitals in the United States, have applied for and received this award. Schuyler Hospital has received the QRCR award every year since it was first awarded in 2003. In addition, Schuyler Hospital has been accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation commission Echocardiography for Adult Transthoracic Echocardiograms.

 

2014

Schuyler Hospital Nominated for HANYS Pinnacle Award for “Flu Vaccine Challenge”
(September) Schuyler Hospital was nominated for the Healthcare Association of New York States (HANYS) Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety. The nomination recognized Schuyler Hospital’s ongoing efforts to improve quality and safety – specifically through the hospital’s “Flu Vaccine Challenge” last fall. Schuyler Hospital Mammography Services Pass US FDA Inspection With No Discrepancies
(July) Schuyler Hospital’s Radiology Department has once again passed the US FDA’s annual MQSA (Mammography Quality Standards Act) inspection with no discrepancies. Congress enacted MQSA to ensure that all women have access to quality mammography for the detection of breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. The rigorous inspection evaluates equipment, staff credentials and training, policies, and performance – including  quality, proper film identification, proper reporting, and proper documentation.

(August) Schuyler Hospital’s Laboratory has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in laboratories. The accreditation award recognizes the Schuyler Hospital Lab’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.  The Lab underwent a rigorous unannounced on-site survey earlier this month. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated the Lab for compliance with standards of care that directly affect the quality and safety of diagnostic services and patient care.


Schuyler Hospital Awarded Re-Accreditation from Joint Commission
(June) Schuyler Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for accreditation by demonstrating compliance with The JointCommission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in hospitals. The accreditation award recognizes Schuyler Hospital’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards. Schuyler Hospital underwent a rigorous unannounced on-site survey in this spring. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated Schuyler Hospital for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.  The Joint Commission’s hospital standards address important functions relating to thecare of patients and the management of hospitals. The standards are developed in consultation with health care experts, providers, measurement experts and patients.

Schuyler Hospital Earns Recognition for Quality of Care
(June) Schuyler Hospital was recently awarded IPRO’s 2013 Quality Award for Organization-Wide Commitment to Quality Improvement. The award, given annually by IPRO, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) and Medicaid Review Agent for New York State, recognizes Schuyler Hospital for their organization-wide commitment to improving the quality of care provided to Medicare beneficiaries.  IPRO praised Schuyler Hospital staff for voluntarily and successfully report hospital inpatient and outpatient data to the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), as well as participating in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) patient satisfaction and meaningful use.  In addition, Schuyler Hospital was applauded for their ongoing involvement with quality improvement projects and efforts to improve patient care through networking with other hospitals and community partners.

2012

Congress enacted the MQSA to ensure that all women have access to quality mammography for the detection of breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.


Schuyler Hospital Auxiliary Recognized for Advocacy
(April) For the third year in a row, the Schuyler Hospital Auxiliary was awarded the Auxiliary Advocacy Recognition by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS). The recognition acknowledges the Auxiliary’s commitment of significant time and effort to serve as an advocate for the Hospital and the community.

(March) Schuyler Hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Services Department has, for the ninth year in a row, earned the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) award from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). This is a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services in hospitals. Hospitals earning the QRCR designation ensure patient safety by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services.


Schuyler Hospital Receives Two Awards from American Diabetes Association

(January) Schuyler Hospital received two awards from the American Diabetes Association, at their 2011 Finger Lakes Tour de Cure Wrap up celebration. Schuyler Hospital was recognized as both a top sponsor, and as a top team, with volunteer participants raising over $3700 to fight diabetes.



Schuyler Hospital Receives Great American Smokeout Award
(January) Schuyler Hospital received the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout Award. Society representatives visited the hospital to present the award and celebrate the evidence-based work being done by the hospital to reduce tobacco use in Schuyler County.

The accreditation award recognizes the Schuyler Hospital Lab’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards. Schuyler Hospital’s Lab recently underwent a rigorous unannounced on-site survey. A team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated the Schuyler Hospital Lab for compliance with standards of care that directly affect the quality and safety of diagnostic services and patient care.

 

 

 

Cancer Society Presents Partner of Excellence Award to Schuyler Hospital
(June) -- At the Schuyler County Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society, Eastern Division and the Tobacco Cessation Center at Arnot Health presented the PARTNER OF EXCELLENCE AWARD IN TOBACCO CONTROL to SCHUYLER HOSPITAL of Montour Falls, NY.  This goal of this Award is to improve the delivery of evidenced-based interventions to tobacco using patients through the clinical setting in order to decrease the terrible burden of tobacco use on the community of Watkins Glen. Schuyler Hospital has complied with the Public Health Guidelines for addressing Tobacco use and Dependence.  In order to achieve this award, the clinical staff at the hospital has worked over the past several years to put policies in place to insure that: 80% of inpatients are Asked about tobacco use; Advised to quit and Assisted in their attempts by the clinical staff, 80% of inpatients who ask to speak to a cessation counselor are counseled, 80% of cessation consults ordered by a patient’s doctor are completed, Inpatients who consent are automatically referred to the New York State Quitline through faxed referral at discharge, A written policy to address tobacco dependence with patients is in place, and Tobacco free grounds policy.

(April) For the fifth year in a row, Schuyler Hospital’s Radiology Department passed the US FDA’s annual MQSA (Mammography Quality Standards Act) inspection with no discrepancies. Congress enacted MQSA to ensure that all women have access to quality mammography for the detection of breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. The rigorous inspection evaluates equipment, staff credentials and training, policies, and performance – including quality, proper film identification, proper reporting, and proper documentation.  The MQSA inspector gave high praise for Schuyler Hospital’s “orderly and neat quality documentation.”

 

 

Schuyler Hospital Auxiliary Recognized for Advocacy
(April) For the second year in a row, the Schuyler Hospital Auxiliary was awarded the Auxiliary Advocacy Recognition by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS). The recognition acknowledges the Auxiliary’s commitment of “significant time and effort to serving as an advocate for your facility and community in 2010,” according to the award letter.

(March) Schuyler Hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Services Department has once again earned the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) award from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). This is a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services in hospitals.  About 700 hospitals, or approximately 15% of the hospitals in the United States, have applied for and received this award. Schuyler Hospital has received the award every year since it was first awarded in 2003.  The QRCR program was started by the American Association for Respiratory Care in 2003 to help consumers identify those facilities using qualified respiratory therapists to provide respiratory care. Hospitals earning the QRCR designation ensure patient safety by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services.

Schuyler Hospital Awarded Re-Accreditation from Joint Commission
(June) By demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission's national standards for health care quality and safety, Schuyler Hospital has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval™. Founded in 1951, The Joint Commission is dedicated to continuously improving the safety and quality of the nation's health care through voluntary accreditation. The Joint Commission's on-site survey of Schuyler Hospital occurred in April. "Above all, the national standards are intended to stimulate continuous, systematic and organization-wide improvement in an organization's performance and the outcomes of care," says Mark Pelletier, R.N., M.S., executive director, Hospital Programs, Accreditation and Certification Services, The Joint Commission. "The Schuyler County community should be proud that Schuyler Hospital is focusing on the most challenging goal -- to continuously raise quality and safety to higher levels."

Your facility has met the annual MQSA Inspection requirements.”

(March) Schuyler Hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Services Department has once again received the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) award from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). This is a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services in hospitals. About 500 hospitals, or approximately 10% of hospitals in the United States, have received this award. Schuyler Hospital has received the award every year since it was first awarded in 2003.

Schuyler Hospital Scores High on Patient Experiences 
(July) Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls recently received high scores in patient experiences, according to a report recently released by Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS).  The national survey rates patients’ perspective of hospital care, and Schuyler Hospital rates at or above national average in numerous categories.  According the HCAHPS, Schuyler Hospital scored above the national average for controlling patients’ pain, explaining medicines before dispensing, and nurses communicating well with patients.  Schuyler Hospital equaled the national average on giving information about what to do during recovery, overall rating of the patient experience, and in whether patients would recommend the hospital to friends and family.

Schuyler Hospital Initiative Nominated for Quality Award
(January) One of Schuyler Hospital’s initiatives to improve quality and patient safety was recently nominated for the Healthcare Association of New York State’s (HANYS) Pinnacle Award for Quality and Patient Safety, and published in HANYS’ 2008 Profiles in Quality and Patient Safety.  The project, "Improving the Process for Reporting Critical Test and Procedure Results," was implemented in June 2007, and involved an interdisciplinary team of multiple department managers and physicians working together to develop and implement the plan.  As a result of the initiative, compliance in all areas of the hospital grew to over 97 percent, resulting in improved communication regarding test and procedure results, and improved quality of care for patients.

Schuyler Hospital Rates High on NYS Department of Health Scorecard
(September) Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls received more good scores – on top of meeting or bettering recently released national averages for wait times in their Emergency Department, and death rates for common illnesses.  In the NYS Department of Health's recently released "Hospital Compare" data, Schuyler Hospital scored highly in the three areas of pneumonia, heart failure and heart attack.  In overall heart attack care, Schuyler Hospital scored 100 percent for giving recommended care to patients having heart attacks. Schuyler Hospital scored 96.72 percent for giving recommended treatment for patients having heart failure, and 97.25 percent for giving recommended treatments to patients with pneumonia. New York State averages are 96.23%, 93.90%, and 91.04% respectively.

 

 

 

 

 

Schuyler Hospital Meets or Exceeds National Averages for Emergency Wait Times, Death Rates
(August) Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls may be a small, rural hospital, but the critical-access facility is meeting or bettering recently released national averages for wait times in their Emergency Department, and death rates for common illnesses. On the average, Schuyler Hospital’s Emergency Department visit times are less than one-half of the national average recently reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – 28 minutes versus the national average of 56 minutes.  In addition, based on death rates recently posted by USA TODAY on their website, for 2006-07, Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls is at or under the national averages for death rates for heat attack (16.4% versus the national average of 16.1%), and pneumonia (11.3% versus the national average of 11.4%), and just over the national average for heart failure (12.7% versus the national average of 11.1%).  The on-line listing allows individuals to compare hospitals small and large across the nation on death rates from heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia.
